Transforming Education

I created this Illustration for Nick Clegg's essay, “How the Metaverse Can Transform Education.” My goal was to illustrate how the advancements of Meta products in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) will revolutionize education to be more immersive and collaborative.

Creative Concept

Ideation

My initial ideas revolved around opening a world of education in a virtual space. I wanted to portray the evolution of education in an explosive and exciting way by making the educational elements float around the subject as they emerge from the pages of books. I carried this theme through all of my initial concepts while making small adjustments to prompt new perspectives and ideas through the first rounds of review with my cross-functional partners. In the second concept, I removed the subject and changed the perspective to be looking through VR goggles. In the third and fourth concepts, I made the subjects the focal point as they interacted with the virtual elements around them.

Initial Feedback:

  • Show more advanced learning as the essay focuses more on professional simulations and higher education.

  • Create a more immersive and collaborative feel.

  • Include both Meta products - Quest 2 and Quest Pro.

Ideation

To make the composition more collaborative, I added a second subject and illustrated the two individuals working together in a virtual space. I replaced all elementary content with more advanced concepts like physics, biology and chemistry.

Feedback:

  • Use chemistry as the educational element as it is familiar to the general public.

  • Move forward with the first concept but separate the virtual items from the real world.

Ideation

To create a virtual feel, I placed the subjects in an abstract setting by adding holographic textures to the background. To distinguish the two spaces and draw the viewer's eye, I made the virtual elements bright and warm and the tangible elements cool and subdued.

Feedback:

  • Make the subjects feel more grounded and in a realistic environment.

  • Add more dynamics, make the virtual elements feel more like holograms.

  • Portray the subjects to be working on the same thing.
